Appraisal interviewing aims to improve the performance of the employee by means of well-prepared, open and honest discussion. Its success depends on the skill and attitude of the appraiser, and that of the appraisee, who should be well briefed on the purpose and process of the appraisal. The appraisal process focuses on behaviours and outcomes, not personality; issues and problems, not subjective gripes; constructive development to improve motivation; and the employee’s growth and performance. Appraisal should take place regularly at least every year, and at most every six months.
"The important part of the word appraisal is the part that reads praise; people respond better to criticism when they know their own best interests are being served."
